Preparing Hydro-climate Inputs for Climate Change in Water Resource Planning

Climate Change and Water Working Group agencies (Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Geological Survey) in cooperation with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) COMET Program and the Western Water Assessment have developed a training program that includes online courses for self-paced training, and a set of subsequent residence courses where students will apply what they have learned through the online training. The courses are part of a professional Development Series called “Assessing Climate Change Impacts on Natural Systems.”

The first element in the series is “Surface Water Hydrology,” which consists of a three-day, online, instructor-led course paired with online materials.  This course has been successfully presented several times. The online component consists of approximately seven hours of self-paced, online prerequisites including:

  1. Preparing Hydro-climate Inputs for Climate Change in Water Resource Planning
  2. Introduction to Climate Models
  3. An Introduction to the Downscaled Climate and Hydrology Projections Website

Visit the site for the Learning Objectives.

Who Should Take the Online Course?

Water resource practioners, planners, water resource engineers, technical specialists and others that need to conduct technical studies for assessing the impacts of climate change on water and water-related natural resources.

Registration

A short registration form is included with the online course. If you are a Department of the Interior (DOI) Employee, the following registration instructions will ensure that your training will be automatically credited to your official DOI training transcript, and will also enable DOI to meet the annual reporting requirements to the Office of Personnel Management.

DOI Employees:

  • Complete all required fields (including the "I'm over 13" checkbox.)
  • Provide your official government e-mail address.
  • Provide your first and last name as they appear on your DOI ID badge.
  • Select “Department of the Interior” as your “Primary Affiliation”.
  • Select your bureau ( e.g. FWS, NPS, Reclamation) as your “Sub-Affiliation”
  • Provide your supervisor’s email address in the space indicated
  • Check the box that says: “Yes, my progress and quiz results may be shared with my employer, organization, or institution”. THIS IS IMPORTANT….it authorizes COMET to send your course completion verification to DOI Learn.

Cost and Availability

The online courses are available to the public at no cost and have no capacity limits, whereas the capacity of instructor-led courses varies according to topic.

While some instructor-led courses are free of charge for employees of sponsoring government agencies, there may be nominal charges for other attendees. Please check the COMETMetEd website for course announcements and details. Residence courses are held in Boulder, CO.
